How to Choose the Right Paint Sheen for Every Room

October 13, 2026 · Back to Blog

Picking a paint color gets most of the attention, but the sheen you choose matters just as much. Sheen affects how a wall looks, how well it hides flaws and how easy it is to clean. Here is a simple guide to choosing the right sheen for each part of your home.

The Sheen Scale

From least shiny to most shiny, the common sheens are flat, matte, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss and gloss. As a rule, the shinier the paint, the more durable and washable it is, but the more it shows bumps, patches and roller marks.

Ceilings: Flat

Flat paint reflects very little light, so it hides imperfections and texture well. That makes it the usual choice for ceilings, including ceilings that have just had popcorn texture removed and been retextured.

Living Rooms and Bedrooms: Matte or Eggshell

Living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms do not get scrubbed often. Matte and eggshell give a soft, low-shine look that hides small wall flaws while still holding up to light cleaning. Eggshell is a little easier to wipe down, which helps in homes with kids or pets.

Hallways and Kids' Rooms: Eggshell or Satin

Hallways and kids' rooms take more bumps, handprints and scuffs. Satin is more washable than eggshell, so it is a good choice where walls need regular wiping. If your walls have a lot of old patches, eggshell may be the better balance.

Kitchens and Bathrooms: Satin or Semi-Gloss

Kitchens deal with grease and splatters, and bathrooms deal with moisture and steam. Satin or semi-gloss resists moisture better and cleans up easily. Semi-gloss is especially useful in small bathrooms without great ventilation.

Trim, Doors and Cabinets: Semi-Gloss or Gloss

Baseboards, door frames, doors and window trim get touched and kicked constantly. Semi-gloss or gloss gives a hard, washable finish and a crisp contrast with the walls. If you prefer the natural look of wood, staining trim is another option.

Exterior Surfaces

Outside, siding is often painted in a flat or satin finish, while trim and doors usually get a glossier finish that sheds water and stands out. Kansas sun and wind are hard on exterior paint, so durability matters.

Prep Matters More Than Sheen

No sheen can hide poor prep. Cracks, holes and nail pops should be repaired before painting, especially if you choose a shinier finish. Because we do both drywall and painting, we can fix the walls first and then paint.
